Best picks for the 10/31 weekend.

Only one of each today, kids.   I’m tempted by the Chiefs, but can’t do it.

FSU +2 @ GT

PIT +1.5 @ WAS

Where are the basketball picks?

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Wow.   I have been overrun with frantic readers wondering where my golden picks are as the NBA season gets underway.

First, my bad.   Mostly for not communicating more clearly.

I never expected to start my picks this early.   Just so everyone knows, I’ll probably start posting picks in a couple weeks.   I have been looking at college more than pro, but will pick both.   I’d guess it’ll be around November 15 that my picks start trickling out, with us getting in full swing about the second week in December.

Thanks for your interest.

My top 25 college football teams - v. 3.0.

Monday, October 27th, 2008

1. UT - A win against a really, really good team without playing quite their best.   I’m convinced.

2. Alabama - No, Tennessee is not that good.   But, they were good enough Saturday to pull the upset.   They came out ready.   And, ‘Bama never let them really believe.   Alabama is for real.

I don’t know if they’ll both win out.   I kinda doubt it.   But, today, that’s the game I want.

3. USC - They played worse at ‘Zona than they did at Oregon State, and were just lucky the Wildcats weren’t up for anything.   I do believe, however, that they would probably win against anybody if they get to Miami somehow.

4. Penn State - They won.   In Columbus and at night, they won.   But, they dropped a little bit in my eyes.   I respect JoePa immensely, but I just don’t think they are top 2.

5. Texas Tech - Wow.  They looked great on Saturday.   KU scored on their 2nd and 3rd possessions, but Tech scored on their first four, and then never looked back.   The defense is clearly better.   But, I’ll be surprised (pleasantly, of course) if they compete with UT on Saturday.

6. OK State - they almost found a way to win and instead found a way to lose admirably.   I “think” they’ll beat OU, and the Texas Tech game could be a blowout either way, which is weird.  Let’s just say the Big 12 South is good.   btw, Baylor is on the way up and TAMU can’t stay down forever with their resources.

7. UGa. - They looked good, too.   LSU seems to be making everyone look good.   I’m pretty pumped for the game against…

8. Florida -  63 points against an SEC D.   They could definitely win out, at which point it’s going to be interesting to see who would keep them out of the championship game.   I wonder if Urban Meyer wants a shot in the NFL.

9. OU - Their defense is struggling without the Vegas kid.

10. Mizzou - Ok, 9 and 10 is where we start to get to the clearly flawed teams.   Mizzou has disappointed.   But, they DID whup up on a decent CU team.

11. Ohio State - were rising up my charts before Saturday.   Maybe I do want to see Penn State in the game, just to see how good their D really is.   The thing that sucks is that they could suffer the same way OSU has with the layoff.

12. TCU - I’m reaching.

13. Tulsa - still reaching.

14.  FSU - should win out, which means they’ll probably lose twice more.

15. Utah - looking forward to the game against TCU; should tell a lot.

16.  Oregon - good team, taking care of what they need to, looking forward to the game against….

17. Cal - that game will go a long way towards determining who’s #2 out west (ok, in the Pac-10).

18. Minnesota - they just keep winning.   I don’t like the all white unis, btw.

19. Boise State - they beat SJSU comfortably, which is good.   Just a couple more minor hurdles.

20. Ball State - Miami is not tough, but NIU, CMU, and WMU all have the ability to upset the Cardinals.

21. Michigan State

22. Notre Dame

23. West Virginia (really?)

24. Troy - only losses to Oklahoma State and Ohio State, but they haven’t  really beaten anybody, either.

25. BYU - when you start off as strong as they did, and then decline to the point where UNLV is passing into the end zone as time runs out to force OT, when you’re at home, things are not good.   But, there’s fucking nobody else worthy, either.

Others receiving votes:  SMU

Chris Cornell.

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Heather and I went to see him last night.    This was our third Chris Cornell show.   The first two were really, really good.  This one, not so much.   I guess we should have been, and kinda were, tipped off by the fact that it was a Timbaland/Chris Cornell show.   But, hey, it’s not like we don’t like Timbaland.   But, when Chris Cornell came on to close the show, and started performing, it started badly and got worse.   And, the place emptied, so it’s not like we were the only ones that didn’t appreciate the difference.   Basically, there’s this rock star on stage.   But, instead of having the show focus on him, there’s basslines and synthesized bullshit.   Then, the second rate guitarists* were turned up to compete.   So, you could barely hear Chris himself.   And then, he only sings the new shit, which even when you hear it without all the bullshit, doesn’t compare to his Soundgarden or Audioslave stuff, or even his previous solo work.   Heather says he sold out, and I have trouble disagreeing with those harsh words.   Two months ago, he was a rock star.   Now, it was like anyone could have been up there and it would have been bad.   But, instead, it’s worse because there’s this former rock star making the same movements and facial expressions to this bullshit.  He’s not Britney Spears, where you cover up his lack of ability with the show.   Or, at least he wasn’t two months ago.
*I don’t know shit about the technical aspects of guitar play, but none of the guys he’s had on the three shows I’ve seen have compared with the recorded stuff.   Take my evaluation of their worth as musicians with a large grain of salt.

I joined last year to do the SI March Madness bracket challenge.   I logged back on because I checked my old e-mail and someone had added me.   Now, I guess because I was active, a few new people have found me in the last 24 hours.   I don’t know how to do much on there, but I’m on there.   Wheeeeeee.

My top 25 college football teams - v. 2.0.

Monday, October 20th, 2008

1. UT - showed me a lot in their win over Mizzou.   I think they’re lucky to be in Austin again instead of Stillwater, but this is their toughest game yet.

2. USC - moved down, but still a great team.

3. Penn. St. - also got jumped by UT.
4. OK State - UT this weekend.    I’ll be cheering for the ‘Pokes due to a bet.   They’ve played UT well and not finished the job.   They have their best team.   I can see almost anything happening.

5. OU - no change.

6. ‘Bama - fell a bit.   Ole Miss is not that good, and ‘Bama playing to their competition continually drops them in my eyes and will end up costing them (unless it doesn’t).   Their toughest games (LSU and Auburn) not looking as tough.

7. UF - bye

8. TTU - another team doing just enough to win.   I think they’ll win at KU this Saturday, but I won’t be surprised if they get routed, either.

9. Ohio State - I don’t know.   Maybe they’d give USC a run now, but I doubt it.   That PSU game will be big.

10. UGa. - still waiting to see more.
11. Oregon - bye

12. Tulsa - big jump.   They looked great on Saturday.   I don’t see anyone in CUSA beating them.

13. Mizzou - yes, I think Tulsa would beat Mizzou.   Wow.

14.  Utah - I would love to see a Tulsa/Utah tilt.  Maybe pull in Boise and Ball and make it a playin to the BCS (no, I’m not a college football playoff proponent - I mean, look at all these games I’m pointing to that would mean less).
15.  Ball State - bye

16. Boise St. - should run the table, but could hiccup.

17. FSU - they make their debut, and could be gone just as quick.   The ACC is a mess.   I think they’re getting it together, but we’ll see.

18. Cincy - bye

19. TCU - People will say BYU was exposed, but BYU is for real and  TCU killed them.

20. GT - kept them out last week due to GW, but  they got their QB and their mojo back.

21. LSU - falling fast.

22. Minnesota - no change.

23. Pitt - If they hadn’t lost to BG, they’d be top 10.   But, ummm, they lost to BG.

24. Arizona - another team that showed me something this week.

25. Notre Dame - bye

Other receiving votes: SMU, fucking choked again.

Fell out: VT and Wake and UNC (ACC) and Michigan State

Best picks for 10/17 weekend.

CMU +2 v. WMU

Tulsa -18 v. UTEP

Illini -15.5 v. IU

Good luck, kiddos.

My shape.

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

I’m still round.

I’ve been involved in a workout bet, and been working out a lot more than in any of the weight loss bets I’ve done in the past.  But, I haven’t lost any weight.   I don’t feel an increase in energy.   I’m definitely more physically fit, and that’s nice, but it’s been ten weeks (forty workouts).   I want fantastic results, and I want them now.

I have not been eating especially healthily, but I’m eating better.    I’m sleeping more and more regularly. I take my multivitamin daily.
I have been thinking about upping my workouts to five a week.   I think that’s more likely than becoming a diet nut.   I have actually “thought” about doing a lot of things, lol.

Any of you have any great tips?

My top 25 college football teams. New Feature!!!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

1. USC - the best team.  They may stumble again, but in a big game for all the marbles, they’d win.

2. Penn St.

3. UT - helluva game today.   Their D will improve, but OU makes everyone look bad.  They would have had no chance playing D like they did last year.
4.  ‘Bama - they may not be the best, but they have the best OL, and they’ll never get embarrassed.

5. OU - helluva game today.   Their D will not improve, and they’ll lose at least one more.

6. Ok. State - Mike Gundy is a man.   He’s 41.

7. Florida - Wow.   They embarassed LSU.    Can they  keep it up?   November 1 against UGa should be good.

8.  Missou - Tough loss today, but I think OSU is more legit than Missou isn’t.   They may lose two more and still be in my top 10.

9.  Texas Tech - Nebraska played really well today, but Tech still should have won by double digits.   And, now they have to worry about THREE division opponents being top 10 (not conference, division).

10. Georgia - tough to get a read on them.   Beat up.   Richt is a good coach.   Stafford doesn’t seem like the real deal to me, and I’m a Dallas guy.

11.  LSU - Wow.   They shoulda hired Pelini.

12.  BYU

13. Ohio St.

14. Oregon

15. Virginia Tech - still dumb to redshirt a kid for one game and then take it off him.

16. Utah

17. Michigan State - I think Ringer may get my Heisman vote.  Probably not.

18. Cincy

19. Ball State - they won by 17 on the road to a conference team that isn’t as bad as their record.    They lost their stud WR a couple weeks ago, and just keep going.   They’re for real.

20. Wake Forest - what the FUCK happened against Navy?

21. Boise State - I have no idea, and don’t see any way to get one.

22. Minnesota - I was pretty surprised, but I think it may be more Illini coasting.   We’ll see.  They get my respect for a week.

23. Tulsa - Enjoy it before Graham bolts for WV and you’re stuck with Malzahn.

24. UNC

25. Notre Dame

Others receiving votes:  SMU

Others that aren’t as deserving as they seem: Georgia Tech (would have been in but won by 3 against Gardner Webb today?), UConn and USF (BEast?), Cal and Vandy (just not that good).

I think as I go on, my polls will get worse and I’ll get lazier, but maybe not.
